Sometimes things just don't work out

The worst part about DIY is the fact that sometimes things just don't work out the way you picture them to in your head. Most of my disappointments come in the form of my cakes. For example, I spent a couple of hours yesterday afternoon working on a dozen cupcakes for my niece's birthday party. Yes, i spent 2 hours on 12 cupcakes...

Cute, right?!
These cupcakes were going to be a surprise for my niece. She was so excited about her birthday party and that her Granny had a high-heel chair for her to sit in for her party, so I thought I would sneak in a few high-heel cupcakes to go with the cake and cupcakes I was already doing. Well, putting the cupcakes together and decorating them was a blast. I just knew she was going to LOVE them! Then, I went to put them in the car....

I don't know how I managed to forget that I live in Georgia and that it's hotter than four hells outside, but as soon as I went to put them in the car, the icing holding everything together started to melt. I knew, at that very moment, this was NOT going to end well. I grabbed some extra icing hoping that if they didn't stay together I would be able to fix them once I arrived. That was a no-go! It was a disaster! Luckily, my niece knew nothing of these cupcakes. However, I still had 2 hours of my life wrapped up in decorating these cupcakes that were now in shambles. It was a little gut-wrenching.

Insert sad violin music here...
A few years ago, this would not have gone over so smoothly with me. I am my toughest critic and I used to get very upset when things like this would happen. These days, I've learned there are some things that just aren't worth crying over. This was one of them. My niece still had a fantastic birthday party! I still had a cute chocolate cake, that luckily made it before melting, and more cupcakes. This was one of those times where it just simply didn't work out, but was also a teachable moment. Now I know, going forward, these are an "Assemble On Site" item! I could easily say I'm never doing these again, but I'm a shoe fanatic, so that's probably not going to be the case. My point is, just move on. If you want to give it another try do it! Think about your process and make note of what went right and what could be done differently. Don't let something like this keep you from ANY DIY project!

When your niece asks for a chocolate cake with chocolate icing, this is what she gets! Glad it survived!

My Current Situation...

So, this is my current situation...

This little chair belonged to me when I was a little girl many, many, moons ago. My mom seriously never throws anything away. So, a few weeks ago she called me and told me that she had this chair and the lounger that matches and asked if I wanted them for my little girl. Of course, I said "Yes", why did I say yes? I thought, at the times, she would just set them aside and I would get them when I was ready and had the free time to actually work on them...WRONG!!!!

Fast forward to about a week ago, she shows up to drop my niece off and pulls these from the back of her car...No time like the present to get started on them. This is going to be an extremely difficult DIY due to the lack of free time I currently posses, the amount of rust I'm dealing with, and the fact that there are lots of twists and hard to reach areas on them. I'm starting with this chair first. Mainly because it's smaller and will determine if I even want to deal with the lounger later. However, I'm excited to do this.

You will see in an upcoming post that my husband took apart my childhood toy box, that was built by my very dear Uncle, and sanded it down and gave it a custom stain job to match my daughter's unique bedroom furniture. Funny, I have a hard time getting him to take the trash, but he spent days trying to match stain for her toy box...he better be glad he's so darn cute! So needless to say, I'm excited about the opportunity to add another little piece of my childhood in the mix!

Wish me luck! I can't wait to share the finished product with you!

Please excuse all the weeds in the background! This has been an unusually RAINY summer in the south!

What am I doing?!

So, this is now a real thing, this blog. Have you ever done something so bazaar and out of your comfort zone that you have to stop and think to yourself, "what am I doing?”  This is something that I have played around with doing for a couple of years now and guess what, I'm doing it. I’m learning that I need to take more risks in life and step outside of my comfort zone a little more; especially now that I have a daughter. It is very important to me to show my daughter to follow her dreams and take a leap of faith, and that’s what this is. This is something that I’ve researched, I’ve prayed about, and now I’m doing it. I’m jumping in feet-first for this new adventure and chapter in my life and I couldn’t be more frightened or excited!

This whole thing still seems a little crazy to me, but I'm hoping that people will take something away from this. I'm really looking forward to sharing some projects that you can do on your own and even with your kids. There is nothing I love more than a project I can do with my kiddo! Most of our projects are done in the kitchen; she loves to cook just like her Mama! What are some of your favorite things to do? What is your passion?

I have a passion for all things creative! I am a newbie to this whole blogging biz, but I hope that you will enjoy the content of this blog. My husband is going to look at me like I'm crazy when I tell him what I have created this time! However, he will be happy that it's not strewn all over our office floor for me to work on! So, here it goes! I'm officially publishing my first blog entry! Thank you for joining me on this crazy journey!
